David Light, CEO of Valisure, Reviews Petition Sent to FDA Regarding Benzene Contamination

Valisure, an independent laboratory, recently sent a Citizen’s Petition to the FDA regarding high levels of benzene found in dry shampoo products.

In an interview with Dermatology Times®, David Light, CEO and one of the founders of Valisure, an independent laboratory that chemically tests drugs and consumer products, gave an overview of their recently submitted Citizen’s Petition sent to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding concerning levels of benzene found in numerous dry shampoo products.

According to Valisure’s report, 70% of the samples tested showed quantifiable levels of benzene. Some samples analyzed directly from contaminated air suggest the sprayed product contained up to 170 times the conditionally restricted FDA concentration limit of 2 parts per million. Valisure’s report also found that when specific dry shampoo products were sprayed into the air of a 550 cubic foot room, in the long run, the amount of benzene still in the air from the spray was 36 parts per billion.

“It is concerning to see that it’s been a year and a half since our first petition and we’re still seeing substantial amounts of benzene in consumer products. So we certainly hope there are rapid actions on regulators and industry in this broad issue of benzene contamination in consumer products,” said Light.
