PortAventura World acquires first hotel outside of resort

PortAventura World has purchased its first hotel outside of the resort, with the Mercure Atenea Aventura located in Vila-seca, less than two kilometres from the attraction in Tarragona, Spain.

Fernando Aldecoa, director general of operations and finance at PortAventura World, said the move “represents the first incursion by PortAventura World into the segment of hotel management outside the boundaries of the resort”.

“Our aim is to offer our visitors the most complete, diverse leisure and best suited to their needs and preferences, and acquiring hotels in the resort area helps us to make this possible,” Aldecoa added.

“From today, PortAventura World is beginning to manage hotel establishments outside the resort as an opportunity to implement its expertise of these years by having hotels under management or rental.”

Aldecoa confirmed the resort is in discussions with other hotels in the area. The Mercure Atenea Aventura has 94 standard rooms and apartments. PortAventura World already operates six hotels with almost 2,500 rooms.

PortAventura expanding hotel offering

Located close to Barcelona, PortAventura World Parks & Resort is one of the leading leisure destinations in Europe. Sine opening in 1995, it has enjoyed more than 90 million visits.

In addition to PortAventura Park, the resort includes Ferrari Land and Caribe Aquatic Park, as well as a convention centre that can hold up to 6,000 people.

PortAventura World will become the first theme park resort to accept Bitcoin payments this year, starting at its hotels. In 2020, PortAventura World announced that the entire resort is carbon neutral.

In December, PortAventura World opened the world’s first LaLiga-themed restaurant, and launched an app-based video game called ‘The Beat Challenge’ as part of its partnership with football league LaLiga.
