E&C Announces Health Subcommittee Markup

Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) and Health Subcommittee Chairwoman Anna G. Eshoo (D-CA) announced today that the Health Subcommittee will hold a markup on Wednesday, May 11, at 10:15 a.m. (EDT) in the John D. Dingell Room, 2123 of the Rayburn House Office Building.

“This week, the Health Subcommittee will mark up six bills that together will ensure safe and effective drugs and biologics, support mental health and well-being, and strengthen public health,” said Pallone and Eshoo.

“The Food and Drug Administration’s user fee programs are critical to ensuring the safety and efficacy of prescription drugs and medical devices that Americans rely on. We must ensure the agency has the resources it needs to provide FDA’s gold standard of safety and efficacy in a timely manner for the American people.

“We’ll also consider a bipartisan legislative package to provide resources for people struggling with mental health and substance use disorders. The need to address the nation’s mental health and substance use disorder crises is greater than ever, and this legislation will help support access to prevention, care, and treatment for Americans of all ages.

“Finally, we look forward to considering measures to enhance public health, including a bill to authorize the creation of ARPA-H, a new agency with the potential to revolutionize medical breakthroughs and transform our society for the better,” Pallone and Eshoo concluded.

The Subcommittee will consider the following bills:

H.R. 7667, the “Food and Drug Amendments of 2022,” which was introduced by Eshoo and Health Subcommittee Ranking Member Brett Guthrie (R-KY). 

H.R. 7666, the “Restoring Hope for Mental Health and Well-Being Act of 2022,” which was introduced by Pallone and full Committee Ranking Member Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA).

H.R. 7233, the “Keeping Incarceration Discharges Streamlined for Child and Accommodating Resources in Education Act” or “KIDS CARES Act,” which was introduced by Reps. Richard Hudson (R-NC) and Annie Kuster (D-NH).

H.R. 623, the “Gabriella Miller Kids First Research Act 2.0,” which was introduced by Rep. Jennifer Wexton (D-VA) and 17 original cosponsors. 

H.R. 3771, the “South Asian Heart Health Awareness Act of 2021,” which was introduced by Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) and 19 original cosponsors.

H.R. 5585, the “Advanced Research Project Agency-Health Act” or “ARPA-H Act,” which was introduced by Eshoo.

This will be a hybrid markup that includes both in person and remote member attendance via Cisco Webex video conferencing. Members of the public may view the markup via live webcast accessible on the Energy and Commerce Committee’s website. Please note the webcast will not be available until the markup begins.

The Committee strongly recommends that members of the media view the proceedings remotely. The Capitol and House Office Buildings currently have restricted access. Seating in the Committee room for credentialed media is very limited. Media must RSVP to their respective press gallery no later than 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 10.
