CHESHIRE — Bethany Mountain Road could remain closed into mid-week as crews continue to clean up 2,000 gallons of oil that spilled on Friday, Department of Energy and Environmental Protection officials said.
At around 11:30 a.m. Friday, an oil truck rolled over on the Bethany Mountain Road section of Route 42, spilling 2,012 gallons of oil along Route 42 into a catch basin and eventually into a dry creek bed.
The driver was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Since then, Environmental Services Inc., a contractor working with DEEP, has been working to remove the oil and contaminated soil, DEEP spokesperson Will Healey said.
Healey issued an update Saturday evening, saying cleanup work is still ongoing.
“As of this afternoon, 30 twenty-yard containers of contaminated dirt had been removed,” Healey said.
He said that on Friday night, work was finished cleaning an area beginning in a trench at the crash site, stretching 378 feet south to a culvert.
Monitoring work is still being done to ensure the spill is not continuing to spread.
The road was cut back six feet from the trench, and could be cut further, Healey said.
“The road remains closed, and staff report it’s possible it could remain closed into mid-next week,” Healey said.
There is still no expected effect on public drinking water supplies at this time.
Further updates are expected from DEEP as cleanup efforts continue.
