Restored Mansion on Long Island’s Gold Coast to List for $12.5 Million

A nearly 100-year-old mansion on the Gold Coast of New York’s Long Island is set to hit the market this week for $12.5 million, Mansion Global has learned.

The 11,743-square-foot residence in Old Brookville, New York, features many of its original details, from the millwork to the windows, all of which have been meticulously restored. The home sits on 12.5 acres and also features a heated saltwater pool, tennis court and a guest cottage, according to listing agent Paul Mateyunas of Douglas Elliman.

“There’s such a rich history there, as far as the original owners, the architects who designed the house, as well as the [recent] restoration,” he said.

The French Norman-style home was built in 1928 for Freemont Carson Peck, Sr., the son of an executive of the F.W. Woolworth Co. and publisher of the Brooklyn Daily Times and Standard Union, according to his obituary in The New York Times. He died in 1990 at the age of 92. The architect was Benjamin Wistar Morris, who learned his trade at Carrère & Hastings—the firm behind the New York Public Library—before founding his own company, LaFarge & Morris.

New York City-based Ferguson & Shamamian Architects helmed a full restoration of the residence, during which “there wasn’t a surface that was left untouched or neglected,” Mr. Mateyunas said.

The three-story iron spiral staircase is said to have been made by master blacksmith Samuel Yellin.

Features of the home include custom millwork, from built-in shelving to hand-finished doors, original windows that have been sandblasted and reassembled, travertine floors in the foyer, moldings and a three-story iron spiral staircase that is rumored to be by master blacksmith Samuel Yellin, according to the agent.

The home has eight bedrooms, eight bathrooms and four powder rooms, plus a billiards room with a walk-in safe and an office/study suite on the third floor.

There’s also a hand-finished pine library, an oak-paneled, sunken living room with French doors opening up to a sunroom, a dining room with a Bay window and two terraces with fountains, and a kitchen with a breakfast nook and butler’s pantry, plus a full catering kitchen.

The landscaped grounds feature a more than 150-year-old English beech tree, woodland walks, a pool and two cabanas, a Har-Tru tennis court and a hearted three-car garage with a work area.

Remy W. Trafelet, the president and CEO of Trafelet & Company, a private investment firm, purchased the home in 2005 for $15 million, according to records with PropertyShark. Representatives for Mr. Trafelet did not immediately return requests for comment.
