Biden’s ‘bad joke’ about Trump’s windmill comments during meeting with renewable energy firm CEOs

‘Are you getting less resistance when you talk about wind? I mean, I know they cause cancer’: Biden’s ‘bad joke’ about Trump’s windmill comments during meeting with renewable energy firm CEOs

  • Biden made a ‘bad joke’ referencing former President Trump’s comments about windmills
  • Trump in 2019 said in a speech said the noise of windmills causes cancer
  • Biden brought it up at a meeting with energy execs Wednesday
  • He wanted to know if there was resistance today to the clean energy source

Former President Donald Trump was once again on President Biden’s mind Wednesday, as he made a joke about windmills at Trump’s expense during an event on alternative energy.

Biden made the unscripted comment as he held brief exchanges with CEOs at a White House event to promote clean energy initiatives in his stalled Build Back Better plan.

‘Are you getting less resistance when you start talking about wind?’ Biden asked Nick Akins, the CEO of American Electric Power.

‘And the windmills – I know they cause cancer,’ Biden dead-panned, getting laughs inside the East Room. ‘Bad joke, I shouldn’t kid about that, the president quickly corrected himself.

‘But all kidding aside, I mean, people. I mean, what kind of resistance do you have to if you’re using wind?’ Biden said, trying to quickly move on.

It was an odd line from Biden, who made the ‘Cancer Moonshot’ a personal cause during his vice presidency.

Trump famously ripped windmills during a 2019 speech where he made the unsubstantiated cancer claim, drawing ridicule online.

‘If you have a windmill anywhere near your house, congratulations, your house just went down 75 percent in value. And they say the noise causes cancer,’ Trump said at the National Republican Congressional Committee’s annual spring fundraising dinner.

‘You tell me that one,’ Trump continued, gesticulated while trying to imitate a windmill going around and around. ‘And of course it’s like a graveyard for birds,’ Trump added.

‘If you love birds you’d never want to walk under a windmill because it’s a sad, sad site. Because it’s like a cemetery,’ Trump added.
