If you’re a sucker for old houses, you need to see this one.
It’s an 1865 farm house on 5.5 acres in Salem that was used at one time as a dairy farm. It’s fallen into disrepair but a lot of original details remain. And it’s listed for sale for $350,000.
“The home needs work, there’s no doubt about it,” said listing agent Janie McCormick with Weichert Realtors in Washington Township. “What it could be is a home that’s one-of-a-kind.”
The 6 bedroom, 1.5 bathroom, 4,034 square foot home has hardwood flooring throughout, original window moulding and shutters.
Its Civil War-era construction pre-dates indoor bathrooms and much of the machinery we have today. So the basement, for example, was dug by hand.
“For that time period it was a very big undertaking,” McCormick said. “I can’t imagine what it was like in 1865. The details … it’s pretty spectacular.”
The Hiresdale Dairy farm was operated on the property and several of the farm buildings are still standing, including a silo.
The Salem County Historical Society does not have a file on the home, according to its librarian.
The property has caught the eye of HGTV’s Cheap Old Houses, which featured it on the channel’s Instagram page.
“The buyer will be somebody who likes the uniqueness of it. The grandeur of it,” McCormick said. “Even though it needs work, there’s so much potential there.”
