A property owner has promised repairs to a damaged four-plex apartment next door to Jason and Rachel Kelley after KMBC 9 Investigates started asking questions Monday.

In Independence just east of Noland Road, the Kelleys have contacted city officials for nearly a year after a fire damaged the building next door.

While city leaders have tried to help, the Kelleys said roach infestations, intruders, and the general run-down condition of the property remain.

“To be honest, I try not to have company over because it’s embarrassing,” Rachel Kelley said.

Jason Kelley said people have broken into the property next door, setting new fires and causing trouble for his wife and children.

“Something has to be done with it,” Kelley said. “The band-aid solutions clearly aren’t working.”

Jackson County property records show the property is now owned by Fight Brands Real Estate LLC. Fight Brands director Jason Krause told KMBC 9 Investigates he just bought the property last month.

Krause told KMBC he is pulling permits with the city to repair and re-rent the property within the next couple of months.

“Should improve the neighborhood value and make everyone involved very happy,” he said.

Independence spokeswoman Meg Lewis said city officials have actively worked with both the previous and current property owners to address concerns for neighbors.

She said the city has given the new owner 60 days to get a structural engineer’s report and obtain permits for the property.

“We expect them to be submitting for permits soon,” she said.

The Kelleys said they hope to see action soon, too.

KMBC 9 Investigates will remain on this case. If you have any concerns, you want KMBC to address about problem properties, email investigates@kmbc.com.
