‘River Dave’ ordered to leave New Hampshire property


The man who has become known as “River Dave” has been ordered, once again, to leave a Canterbury property he has lived on for nearly 30 years but does not own. David Lidstone, 81, was told to appear Thursday in Superior Court in Concord for a hearing, but he was a no-show. Judge Andrew Shulman ordered Lidstone to leave the property or face a fine of $500 per day.”I think this was a deliberate failure to appear,” Shulman said. “I think it’s a waiver of his right to be present. I think it’s a waiver of his right to a hearing. I think it’s a waiver of his right to be heard.”Lidstone has been at the center of a years-long legal battle over the property. A court previously issued a permanent injunction for him to leave the land, but attorney Lisa Snow Wade, who represents the property owner, said Lidstone has returned.Court documents filed by Snow Wade show Lidstone has built another structure after his original home burned down over the summer. “A roof has been put back on, solar panels have been installed and he’s been living there, which is in direct violation of the court’s order of permanent injunction that has been in place,” she said.Shulman found Lidstone in contempt of the court’s injunction and ordered him to leave the property. He has until April 11 or pay the daily fine, which will go to the property’s owner.
