Walking through a Kips Bay Decorator Show House is like being in a mood board brought to life; every space within the home is utterly transformed by one of 24 designers from across the U.S. This year, the fifth annual Palm Beach house is older than typical sites, as it was built in the 1920s in West Palm Beachs Old Northwood Historic District.

“It is a beautifully restored home known locally as ‘the Mansion of Northwood,’ but we quickly saw that the oldness of the house provided its own set of challenges to the designers,” says Nazira Handal, director of special events & corporate partnerships at Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club. “Interior designer Paloma Contreras worked with slanted walls and was able to create stunning wall art that leveled out the room (top image), while Sarah Bartholomew drew inspiration for her color palette from the original tile in her bathroom space and Ashley Gilbreath used curtains to tent the room to disguise imperfections.”

The house itself is built in the Italian Renaissance style, with a main house that features four bedrooms and three-and-a-half baths, and a guest home with an additional two bedrooms, the living spaces are frequently referred to as “grand,” thanks to their sweeping ceilings and staircases. In other words, there was plenty of space for all of the participating designers.

Although the interior designers don’t coordinate their rooms together, inevitably colors and motifs worm their way into the home’s zeitgeist. This year, the Pantone Color of the Year, Very Peri (a bold lavender hue) pops up throughout the home and when it came to decorative walls, not even the ceilings were left uncovered. “A handful of designers including Beth Diana Smith, Chris Goddard, and Philip Gorrivan utilized the ceiling space by adding vibrant wallpaper and architectural elements,” says Handal.
