Maison Bernard, Théoule-sur-Mer, France


Designed by Antti Lovag, a key figure in the bubble architecture movement, this incredible 1970s structure in the South of France is a spherical masterpiece. Following an extensive five-year renovation by French architect Odile Decq, the Maison Bernard has now been restored to its former glory.

With its tubular tunnels and deep red façade, the Maison Bernard could easily be mistaken for a sci-fi film set. Comprising a sequence of interconnected bubbles, Lovag decided on the flow of rooms and the positioning of windows and doors first, leaving the structure to evolve with his ever-changing ideas. An expanding iron frame allowed the design to morph and grow until it was ready to be coated with a layer of concrete.

Maison Bernard, Théoule-sur-Mer, France


Originally built for industrialist Pierre Bernard who funded Lovag’s experimental work, the property’s irregular shape was inspired by the rugged landscape of Théoule-sur-Mer. Circular porthole-style windows hinge upwards, opening up the indoor living spaces to the great outdoors.

When it comes to the interior, Odile Decq’s renovations saw the introduction of a brilliantly bold color palette. Each section of the structure is zoned with a different hue, from bubblegum pink to sunny yellow and lime green, creating a kaleidoscopic color journey as you move through the building.

Managed by the Maison Bernard Endowment Fund, the house is now open to the public so you can see this otherworldly space for yourself. The fund is also offering artists the chance to stay in the unique property for a residency and produce art inspired by the structure.

Biomorphic House, Neve Daniel, Israel

French-born architect and interior designer Ephraim Henry Pavie built this four-story home for his family in 2007. Like Lovag, Pavie was inspired by the spherical shapes of the natural world.

Located on Israel’s West Bank, the freeform building was constructed entirely from concrete, with the home’s elongated windows bulging out from the structure, creating a futuristic silhouette.

At school, Pavie’s architecture teachers warned him that if he wanted to graduate, he’d have to start sketching conventional rectangular structures like everyone else. However, once he’d secured his diploma, Pavie went on to build bubble houses in Paris, Miami and Israel.

Inside, the home’s intricately crafted curves can be fully appreciated. Expansive windows draw in the surrounding landscape, allowing light to pour into the unique open-plan living spaces. Pavie didn’t see why his designs should be limited to geometric shapes, which were so at odds with the circular shapes found in the natural world.

Rather than beginning with a fixed plan for the structure, Pavie’s design process for the house was flexible, adapting and transforming the architecture onsite until the silhouette felt complete. Concrete was then sprayed on to seal the shape.

Hutong Bubble, Beijing, China


With development in Beijing drastically altering the city’s landscape, this innovative bubble extension was devised to protect the area’s historic architecture, adding extra space to this residential property without detracting from its heritage.
