Breweries, wineries, distilleries can reopen this weekend without serving food

For the first time in more than eight months, breweries, wineries and distilleries in California will no longer have to serve food to be open for customers. “I think less requirements are going to be great,” said Cynthia Lee, co-owner of Dark Heart Brewery in Sacramento. Lee has been through her fair share of rough patches this past year, with the pandemic hitting just five months into her brewery’s grand opening. She also underwent heart surgery in September. “It was brutal,” she recollects. “Just adapting constantly to the ever-changing environment we’re in.”Today, she’s hopeful that the relaxed restrictions also mean an infusion of customers and revenue. From there, Lee says, she expects to start hiring workers. ” gives us the opportunity to hopefully expand a little bit,” she said. “Come spring and summer we’ll definitely need some hands.”The state originally introduced the “no food, no drinks” rule to prevent customers lingering and mingling in large groups, which can spread the virus. Under the new rules, businesses in counties in the purple and red tiers, are still restricted to outdoor service a 90-minute seating time limit, and an 8 p.m. shut-down. The California Craft Brewers Association on Friday shared that businesses can stay open past 8 p.m., but only if a meal is provided.
