🌱 Farmers’ Market At Chinatown’s Gold Line Station + Synagogue Vandal

Hello all; today is National 529 Day, which was founded by the College Savings Foundation. It’s me, Sylvia, your host of the Los Angeles Daily. Keep reading for everything you need to know about what’s happening these days in town.

What was once a food desert in Chinatown is now an opportunity for local vendors and businesses. Also, someone carved swastikas into a synagogue’s office windows. Finally, the Lakers have a new coach!

Here are the top stories in Los Angeles today:

  1. On Thursday, Chinatown finally got its own farmers’ market. Situated next to the Gold Line station, it will run every Thursday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. The area had been considered a food desert since the closing of the Ai Hoa Market in 2019. Right now, the market has 30 vendors, which means that there is plenty of room for other local vendors and businesses to come in. (LAist)
  2. Somebody scratched swastikas into the office windows of a local L.A. synagogue early Friday morning. A police report has been made. It is concerning that “antisemitic incidents reached an all-time high in 2021.” (U.S. News)
  3. The Los Angeles Lakers hired a new coach. We learned on Friday that the organization selected Darvin Ham, “a long-time assistant of Milwaukee Bucks head coach, Mike Budenholzer.” Fans in the know consider it an “avoided disaster.” Now, speculation is underway who will be the head coach’s assistant in L.A. (Fansided)
  4. In-person early voting began Saturday. There are also several vote-by-mail drop box locations that let you return the ballot you received in the mail. Even if you missed the registration deadline, you can still vote with a conditional voter registration ballot. Make your voice hear by June 7. (Fox)
  5. There are several Memorial Day events in the area. The Church of Scientology of Los Angeles will hold a family fun festival from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday. A Memorial Day Ceremony is planned at Alhambra Park at 11 a.m. A service is taking place at Fairhaven Memorial Park at 7:30 a.m. Also, remember that Fleet Week is going on! (LA Fleet Week)
