Suspect arrested in killing of prominent real estate developer

Police on Sunday announced the arrest of a suspect in the recent killing of a prominent real estate developer.

The arrest came several weeks after Eldad Peri was shot dead outside a synagogue in Rehovot last month.

The suspect, a 64-year-old Rishon Lezion resident, was expected to appear before a court later Sunday for a remand hearing.

Officers detained another seven suspects for questioning in connection with the case.

Investigators have been exploring several possible motives for the shooting, including that Peri was killed because he was deeply in debt.

His real estate business had gone bankrupt over debts of hundreds of millions of shekels, and he was in deep personal debt as well.

The suspect arrested Sunday does not have any criminal history, according to the Haaretz daily, which said the theory that Peri may have been killed by criminal creditors was therefore being set aside for the time.

Peri’s lawyer Benny Katz has said he was not been aware of any threats to his client’s life.

Police believe Peri was shot multiple times by an assassin who had arrived on a motorbike outside a synagogue frequented by Peri. The killer then fled the scene.
