Gas leak prompts evacuations in San Jose


SAN JOSE, Calif. (KRON) – A gas leak in San Jose has prompted some evacuations on Wednesday afternoon.

San Jose police and fire officials are responding to the area of Race Street and Eugene Avenue.

Authorities ask residents to avoid the area.

At this time, some evacuations are taking place within a 900 feet radius. Police say they will come to the doors of those needing to be evacuated.

Bascom Community Center at 1000 South Bascom Avenue is being used as a shelter.

No injuries have been reported.

PG&E officials were notified and also responded to the area.

San Jose fire officials reported that PG&E determined that an 8-inch steel natural gas line was ruptured.

Authorities estimate the line being capped by midnight.

At this time, 30 customers have their gas turned off.

No other details have been released at this time.
