MBTA resumes Green Line service 2 weeks after deadly Boston garage collapse

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority resumed Green Line subway service between North Station and Government Center Station, effective immediately, two weeks after a partial collapse at a Boston parking garage led to a demolition worker’s death.The MBTA said Saturday that structural engineers comprehensively inspected the Green Line tunnel throughout the week, including the shared wall between the Green and Orange lines, and deemed it structurally sound.On March 26, part of the Government Center parking garage at 1 Congress St. collapsed and fell to the street below as a result of a construction accident, which claimed the life of 51-year-old Peter Monsini, of South Easton.Three days after the partial collapse, the MBTA resumed Orange Line subway service between North Station and Back Bay Station following inspections of the tunnels.Green Line service did not resume until Saturday, however, because more than 100 tons of debris fell directly above the Green Line as a result of the collapse and had to be removed before inspections could begin and trains could be tested in the tunnel.”The MBTA thanks all of its riders for their patience during this period of debris removal, infrastructure assessment and service restoration,” the agency said in a statement.Structural engineers will continue to closely monitor the tunnel between North Station and Government Center station during daily Green Line operations.The MBTA said Green Line and Orange Line trains, however, will continue to bypass Haymarket Station while personnel complete some repair work on the standpipe system, which was damaged by debris from the garage collapse.
