Leaders to discuss Australia’s health system, booster shots and back to school plans at National Cabinet


Australia’s leaders will discuss the capacity of the nation’s health system at National Cabinet following one of the country’s deadliest pandemic days.

There were 87 COVID-19 deaths recorded on Wednesday alongside more than 50,000 cumulative new infections.

The capacity of the health system, an update on the vaccine rollout and supply chain issues will be on the table at Thursday’s meeting between Prime Minister Scott Morrison, premiers and chief ministers.

The return to school for millions of children next week also likely to be discussed.

When it comes to the vaccination rollout, slightly more than 93 per cent of Australians aged 16-plus are now double-dosed.

Federal data shows about 33 per cent of all Australian children between the ages of five and 11 have received a first dose.

Nearly 76 per cent of the overall 12-to-15 age cohort is double-dosed.
