OANDA hires FX Global Code contributor Lisa Shemie as General Counsel

Lisa Shemie was Chief Legal Officer at Cboe and was part of several working groups under the Global Foreign Exchange Committee, which is responsible for the FX Global Code.

OANDA has appointed Lisa Shemie as General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, where she will be responsible for overseeing the firm’s legal function worldwide.

Based in New York, Ms. Shemie will also sit on the executive committee of the online multi-asset trading services, currency data, and analytics provider.

Lisa Shemie joins OANDA from Cboe Global Markets, where she was Chief Legal Officer of each of Cboe’s foreign exchange trading venues, Cboe FX Markets, and Cboe SEF.

The financial services lawyer has 20 years of experience within the trading industry, having worked with financial powerhouses such as JP Morgan Chase.

Gavin Bambury, Chief Executive Officer of OANDA, said, “Given her reputation as a respected member of several FX industry committees and impressive credentials in the foreign exchange and broader financial services sector, we believe Lisa will be a considerable asset to the firm. She brings with her proven commercial, managerial, regulatory, operational and strategic expertise, which will enable her to help drive corporate growth while serving as a trusted advisor to the company in the years to come. We look forward to welcoming her to OANDA.”

Lisa Shemie, OANDA’s General Counsel, said: “Over the years, OANDA has earned a reputation for integrity in the FX community, emerging as an industry leader, widely recognised for its dedication to the success of its clients. I’m looking forward to partnering with the business to help capture new opportunities and fuel company expansion in the future.”

The new General Counsel at OANDA has served on the Financial Markets Lawyers Group, comprising senior lawyers of FX market participants who meet under the guidance of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

In addition, she co-chaired the Market Structure Subcommittee of the CFTC’s Market Risk Advisory Committee, she chaired the Foreign Exchange Professionals Association, and was part of several working groups under the Global Foreign Exchange Committee, which is responsible for the FX Global Code.

OANDA has been plagued with a series of deficiencies from a compliance standpoint, having been fined $200,000 by the National Futures Association in late March.

OANDA has recently appointed former E*TRADE chief executive Karl Roessner as a Non-Executive Director and ex-Fidelity John Farda as Managing Director of North America.

The FX broker also hired Philip Holemans as Chief Financial Officer. Prior to this job, he was CFO at GE Capital in the Benelux, Germany, and Czechia offices. His most recent role was with WiZink, which is an Iberian digital bank, where he was the CFO as well.
